welcome to Goddard College EDU program! Here's where we will try to tell you all the things you need to know before you arrive...
Getting Here:
Goddard VT is in Plainfield, Vermont. The Goddard website has some basic driving directions, and we encourage folks to carpool. If you are flying or Amtraking in, email us and we may be able to help you set up a ride.
What To Bring:
It is COLD in Vermont in January. You WILL need gloves and a hat as well as actual winter clothes. It's not a bad idea to pack clothing for layering. Long underwear, even. Make sure you have boots for walking on the path to the dorms and the library. If your boots aren't great on slick surfaces, consider a pair of Yaktrax.
Sheets and towels are provided, but you may wish to bring your own if you have room or would find it more comfortable. A laptop is a good idea if you have one, though there are computers and printers on campus. A note taking device of some kind, whether it's the old school pen and notebook or a new school iPad and bluetooth keyboard, is a must. Some rooms don't have three pronged plugs, so a 2-3 prong converter is a good idea. If you plan to do laundry while on campus, bring quarters. Detergent is sold at the Help Desk, as is soap and shampoo if you forget yours.
Self Advocacy:
If you have dietary restrictions, let the kitchen know. They are happy to help. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options are at every meal.
If you need disability accommodations or help navigating that system, Suzy Shedd is happy to help.
Here's what some returning students wish they'd known:
--Expect to engage in deeply personal conversations with people you barely know... And like it!
--Be prepared to surrender to the confusion of it all. engage with as many people as possible, because they will help you sort it out throughout the semester. be organized and jot down your questions in one place, and bring them to your first individual meeting with your advisor.
--Expect it to feel confusing and scary some of the time...but it gets better fast!
--Expect to feel overwhelmed, but also expect to work your way through that feeling, only to end up somewhere you never would have been otherwise.
